Only Good On Paper (September 2021)

Who are the band members and what do they play?
Max Mulhuyzen on drums, Maarten van den Ende on bass (both of Between the Jars) and complementary backing vocals by Omar Luquin (of Lookeen). Vocals, guitars, ukulele, piano and percussion by Nathan's Brother.

How and where did you get together?
Max and me were formerly in the band Lookeen (fronted by Omar). Maarten is Max' band mate in their current band Between The Jars.

What are the band's main influences?
It's basically a couple of songs written over the years on acoustic guitar that have gotten a 'full band' arrangement. Our influences are too many to mention (or even to remember) while at the same time it doesn't feel like we copied anything from other bands.

Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV appearances?
Nathan's Brother is basically a recording artist only but we've streamed on Streamsonic, IndieArtst and our own YouTube channel.

Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?
Nathan's Brother also fronts a heavy progressive rock band called Axleland.

Do you have any favourable quotes from previous reviews of the band that you'd be happy to share?
"Every track has something special, an accordion, an exotic Saz or Latin percussion. Although the lyrics are autobiographical, Nathan's Brother understands the art of choosing his words in such a way that many a listener can identify with them. If 'Spot On' (debut album - red.) makes one thing clear, it is that Nathan's Brother should have gone solo much earlier. But better late than…" (Pinguin Radio)

Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?
Recorded at Sasapalooa Studios with additional recordings at home. The songs have been mixed and mastered by Grammy Award winner Dave Darlington in New York.

Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?
After the completely self-recorded debut album, which achieves sonic consistency but at times can also feel a bit stale, the new album is purposefully based on collaboration, recording the backbone of each track live in the studio to achieve a more lively feel.

Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about? If you are releasing an album then either describe the thinking behind the project or choose a couple of lead tracks to focus on.
The album title and first song are inspired by the lack of emotional depth in real life connections. The second song is about substance abuse and the (perceived) inability to live life without it. The third songs is about a photo on Tinder.

Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.
Omar's high pitched backing vocal on 'Meadow 21' have been mistaken to be that of a female soul singer (reminiscent of Merry Clayton in 'Gimme Shelter').

Please provide a one or two-line personal quote that can be attributed to a band member, about either the band themselves or the release. Obviously the more eye-catching this is the better.
Max Mulhuyzen (the drummer) is probably one of the biggest talents of his generation.

Spot On (January 2021)

Who are the band members and what do they play?
All me playing acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, saz, drums and seaboard.

How and where did you get together?
Not applicable.

What are the band's main influences?
Everything from classical music to heavy metal.

Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV appearances?
Not as a solo artist.

Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?
Not yet.

Do you have any favourable quotes from previous reviews of the band that you'd be happy to share?
“A vibrant refreshing mix of on par vocals and instrumental craftsmanship” (IndieArtst)

Where was the single/EP/album recorded and who was involved in its production?
At home and in a self constructed vocal booth at a friend's house.

Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?
These are mainly songs that remained on the shelf while being in bands.

Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about? If you are releasing an album then either describe the thinking behind the project or choose a couple of lead tracks to focus on.
Most songs are about either failed or successful romances. Exceptions are 'Mind At Ease' which is about (finding) mindfulness, 'Vigilante' which is about following no set rules as a musician and 'Front Man Veto' which is an instrumental track inspired on my credo that a band's front man needs to have the final say, otherwise the music may result in colorless consensus.

Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP? As above, list whatever might be of relevance.
I used to have half of my instruments in a garage box with not much of climate control, so I would frequently move my gear back and forth between my house and the box.

Please provide a one or two-line personal quote that can be attributed to a band member, about either the band themselves or the release. Obviously the more eye-catching this is the better.
Years in the making, the debut album by Nathan's Brother is finally a reality. Start off the new year with some refreshing new tunes!
